Quote du Jour

- "It is not enough to do your best; you must know what to do, and then do your best."

My dad sent me this quote the other day. He thinks it's time that I look into a real profession. He's probably right. It's just hard, to have spent your whole life on one thing and then try and conceive a change.

Hey Tom,
This is an interesting question and consideration for you. Do you have a top ten list of things you would like to do, given the opportunity? Seriously, if someone offered you the opportunity and the training today what area would you feel an excitement about pursuing? I am thinking about this for myself as well.

Trust God,

Sweet Cheeks,
Life is too short not to do what you love. You may want to consider another variation of what you are doing now, but YOU have been lucky enough all your life to know what drives you, what makes you happy and what gives your days meaning. That's really rare, and a real gift. I understand where your dad is coming from, but I also know that if you aren't passionate about what you are doing, generally, you are missing out. You carry far too much passion for your magic to do something else, if you can possibly help it. And I refuse to believe that you are helpless in this regard. You've never been a victim of circumstance or societal expectations. Why on EARTH would you start now?

Also, is considering a 9-5 job some sort of sick and twisted mid-life crisis for you? Go schtup a buxom 20 year old and then do some magic, you slacker!!

You know exactly who this is....

Tom - when I first started teaching after doing magic fulltime for many years, I felt like I was somehow throwing in the towel or that I hadn't been good enough to make it. In actuality, I do just as much magic now as I ever did. The only difference is that I have more money and less stress.

I think you'll find the extra work and cash is all it takes to pull you out of your rut. And if it sucks, you can always quit.

Here's another way to look at it: What has doing magic taught you after all this time? Not just the tricks, but dealing with people, event planning, public speaking, etc. You can take what you've learned, build on it and go farther...and still do magic when you want.

I think my friend that you are exactly where you need to be and doing what it is you should be doing, that raises the question, are you doing YOUR best? Not what someone else thinks that might be. But Tom Franks best?! Perhaps a written plan of attack, eaching magic lessons, performing magic, giving lectures etc...
I didn't think the quote from your dad necessarily meant a "9-5" job... It said to do your best, which means, give it YOUR ALL! I believe Tom, that the divorce from Moira, the battle for your rights and the custody issues, the loss of your business has temporarily laid waste to you and your immense ambition and drive. Robbing you of your will for awhile. It is difficult to constantly be self motivated. You have chosen a field of making money that requires you to be self motivated. You have to be totally ruthless with yourself to succeed. Perhaps the last few years have sapped your strength and will a bit, BUT!!!! Like The Phoenix rising, I believe in you and know you will succeed! Get after it, get up off your rusty dusty, pick yourself up, dust yourself off and start all over again! You da man, just need a plan!!!
Love you
Tim

While he is quite the master of the cliche, Tim has said a mouthful. Ambition is a whole nuther animal from profession, you know? For instance, rather than working the Market for dinner money, why not work it like a job, and make a real living? I know you'll be thinking right now, "But I don't want a real job." Can't you do what you love, but professionally? Can't you keep working *beyond* today's needs and try to get ahead? There is life beyond the bills, Tom. Lose the street performer's attitude of making only what you need for the moment, and be an adult, a father AND a magician. You are just a few hours a day away from the success that your Dad wants for you, and all the other people who love you, too.
