In my "In Box" • Email from Polly
I've spent most of the afternoon on the computer, sucked in by the blog, catching up on the last 4-ish years of your life. What I have missed by not having you in my life as my friend! How lucky I am to catch up on all things Frank.
The quote is from Michael Chabon, from an essay on becoming a man, and in the process, a writer.
"We are accustomed to repeating the cliche, and to believing, that "the most precious resource is our children." But we have plenty of children to go around, God knows, and as with Doritos, we can always make more. The true scarcity we face is of practicing adults, of people who know how marginal, how fragile, how finite their lives and their stories and their ambitions really are but who find value in this knowledge, and even a sense of strange comfort, because they know their condition is universal, is shared. You bring your little story to the workshop, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't; and then you're gone, and it's time for someone else to have the floor."
I can't wait to see you.
Absolutely all my love, Polly

My Response
Dear Polly,
I can't believe you spent the afternoon reading all my bullshit. I must say that I'm honored that you think enough of me to do that. Either that, or you must be REALLY board.
It was such a treat talking to this morning. It brought back some really fine memories. It made me wonder why we didn't spend more time together. It seems that we were always off on our own adventures, but when we did see each other and spend time together that is was always fun and never complicated.
The older we get that faster the years fly by. Crazy huh? Sometimes I try and figure shit out, but mostly as you have always known, I just live and experience.
The quote in your email, says if all.
I can't wait to see you too. We have a lot of catching up to do. I want to hear all about your adventures.
with love and respect
your old friend
Tom
